Board Certified Orthodontist
It seems like all of the professionals that we count on in our daily lives are board certified. Your doctor, your area’s school superintendent, maybe the CEO or president of your company – each of these figures and so many others have been certified by a board. Sometimes, this board is investors but usually, it’s a governing board that ensures a professional has passed a certain aptitude test. These boards exist so as to provide peace of mind to anyone who uses a person’s services. Certification from a board says: “this person is qualified to do what they say they can do.” What most people don’t realize is that not all orthodontists are board certified. In fact, a minority of them are.
Beyond Board Certification
To be clear, this doesn’t mean that a majority of orthodontists don’t know what they’re doing, or something. Many of them do their jobs in a fine, standard manner. However, it does mean that they don’t have the extra training and expertise that a board-certified orthodontist like Dr. Bita does. It means that they can’t perform as many services to the same level of excellence as Dr. Bita can. There are very few board-certified orthodontists in a given area. There’s a good reason for that: it’s quite difficult to achieve board certification.
What Board Certification Means
The steps to reach board certification are steep indeed. First, someone like Dr. Bita has to pass all the same kinds of tests that a dentist does. That means going to undergrad, passing the “Dental Acceptance Test” and then graduating from an accredited dental school. After passing the national and state licensing exams, Dr. Bita had to get into an accredited orthodontic program. Once there, she had to work and study to get an orthodontic residency. After two to three years of that, she was an orthodontist. Frankly, this feels like so much work we’re almost tired simply typing it out in this blog.
To that point of expertise, that’s where most orthodontists stop. At that point, Dr. Bita was an orthodontist. She could’ve just quit and go into practice. After all, that’s what a majority of orthodontists do. But, she wasn’t done. She wanted to get that board certification. So, she completed the ABO written exam. Then, it was time for the case submission at the clinical exam. Finally, peer review of critical outcomes by the ABO (American Board of Orthodontics) itself. Then and only then did she become a board-certified orthodontist. Of course, she also has to go through this last part of the process every decade. It’s easy to see why so few orthodontists go to all that much trouble.
