Following this, she had to pass national and state licensing exams before entering an accredited orthodontic program. Upon enrollment, she dedicated herself to both work and study in order to complete an orthodontic residency, which typically took two to three years. It was quite a rigorous journey!
To that point of expertise, that’s where most orthodontists stop. At that point, Dr. Bita was an orthodontist. She could’ve just quit and gone into practice. After all, that’s what a majority of orthodontists do. But she wasn’t done. She wanted to get that board certification. So, she completed the ABO written exam.
Then, it was time for the case submission for the clinical exam and, finally, the peer review of critical outcomes by the ABO (American Board of Orthodontics) itself. Only then did she become a board-certified orthodontist. Of course, she also has to go through this last part of the process every decade. It’s easy to see why so few orthodontists go to all that much trouble.
