new braces

You may have just gotten your new braces put on for the first time, and you are likely a little nervous about how to care for them properly. You (or your parents) have paid a lot of money for those new braces, so taking care of them correctly can be a big responsibility for this big investment.

When it comes to braces, careful cleaning is going to be required. Plaque buildup can cause bacteria to be easily trapped inside the wire and behind the brackets of your metal braces. Following the right cleaning procedure can be the best way to ensure that you are doing everything you can to keep your mouth clean and your braces in good repair.

Your New Routine

One of the first steps in your nightly routine involves preparing to brush by removing any elastics or removable parts of your braces. Your next step is to clean them. You can do this by holding your brush at a 45-degree angle and working it around the wires and pins of your braces. You will want to brush from the top of each wire and go down to the bottom. Take time to be sure that all debris and plaque has been removed as your work through your upper and lower areas.

Brush Each Tooth and Floss

You will want to brush each tooth individually by placing your brush again at that 45-degree angle. From there, you will want to apply pressure (gently) and brush all over each tooth. You should be flossing at least once a day. Your orthodontist can show you the best ways to floss with your braces. You can also find dental products that are specifically meant for flossing. An easier option these days might be getting Invisalign.

Rinse and Check

As a final part of your routine, you will want to rinse and check your teeth. This means thoroughly rinsing your mouth with water before examining the inside of your mouth and teeth in your mirror.

Go to Your Dental Appointments

Make sure that you aren’t missing your dental appointments. Remember that your braces are an expensive investment, and ensuring they work is very important. When you sit down with your orthodontist, you can discuss any issues you may have been having recently, and they can adjust your braces if needed. Keep in mind your doctor is a busy person with many other patients and missing crucial appointments can set you back on your timeline to straight and healthier teeth.
